Adhesives

Research topic

We develop binders for adhesives for the production and bonding of wood, wood-based materials, (bio-)composites and other materials. The focus is hereby directed on the utilization of sustainable raw materials and the integration of application-specific functions such as flame retardancy or debonding.

Bio-based adhesives make wood-based materials and wooden structures even more sustainable.

When developing adhesives, we work closely together with our industrial customers in order to develop the most efficient solutions. We implement specific developments for their application. If no solution can be found using commercially available materials, we synthesize customized binders under near-industrial conditions.

In addition, future-oriented new developments form an important focus of our work. We develop functional adhesives on the basis of renewable raw materials, which are comparable to conventional adhesives in terms of their properties. Examples include formaldehyde-free adhesives for the production of wood-based materials on the basis of modified sugars or the utilization of lignin as a polyol component for 2-C polyurethane adhesives. These adhesives are primarily used in the wood and hybrid sectors in heat bonding, surface gluing or as hot-melt adhesives.

Also being pursued are research approaches for the integration of further functionalities such as a repeated "switching ON and OFF" of the adhesive effect for debonding-on-demand applications or forming processes, as well as the development of flame-retardant systems for applications in the construction, electronics and mobility sectors.
