Blocked isocyanates in wood-based material manufacture
In this Fraunhofer WKI Online Seminar, you can find out how the bonding strength and water resistance of amino resins as adhesives in the manufacture of wood-based materials can be improved.
In a Fraunhofer WKI project, supported by the International Association for Technical Issues Related to Wood, isocyanates and amino resins were combined to link the advantages of both systems.
The challenge thereby lay in the controlled regulation of the high reactivity of the isocyanates, which can lead to abreaction during the mixing process.
The project approach involves disabling the isocyanates with a blocking agent which is split through thermal action. This means that the isocyanates as a reactive curing agent are thereby not released for reaction with the amino resin until hot pressing occurs.
The blocked isocyanates were characterized regarding their unblocking temperature and were applied on pilot plant scale in the manufacture of particle boards.
The Webinar is aimed at manufacturers of wood-based materials and participants from the adhesives industry.
