Cyclic fatty acid-based monomers as binder components in paint development

In this Fraunhofer WKI Online Seminar, you can find out how bio-based binder components with cyclic substructures can be synthesized from random unsaturated fatty acids through simple chemical modifications.

In this Fraunhofer WKI Online Seminar, you can find out how bio-based binder components with cyclic substructures can be synthesized from random unsaturated fatty acids through simple chemical modifications. Fatty acids are present as mixtures in natural oils and can be differentiated by both the chain length and the degree of saturation. The challenge was, therefore, to develop a universally-applicable functionalization method. The experts from the specialist department Surface Technology investigated fatty acids with varying degrees of saturation and transferred the results onto a technical fatty acid mixture. The cyclic monomers produced are interesting, bio-based alternatives to synthesis components such as phthalic or trimellitic anhydride. Following polymerization of the monomers, viscoplastic paint films are expected.

The Webinar is aimed at binder manufacturers and representatives from oleochemistry, as well as paint manufacturers and end-users of coated products.
