New approaches for adhesives on demand

"Gluing on demand" enables the use of fast-curing adhesives with a long wet life for the joining of bondings. During the Fraunhofer WKI online seminar, the challenges and solution approaches for this technology will be presented using two selected research projects.

Fast-curing adhesive systems for application in wood panel prefabricated buildings

First, the thermoplastic adhesive was applied to both sides of a thin, film-like and finely-perforated expanded metal sheet. This "adhesive tape" was then positioned between the two parts which were to be bonded. The heating and curing of the adhesive bond was effected through an electric current, introduced through the ends of the bands.

Innovative pMDI adhesive capsules

During the Fraunhofer internal project “GluePearls”, the application of pMDI adhesives for the surface bonding of wood was investigated. Through a patent-pending method, it is possible to produce isocyanate microcapsules. The resultant adhesive system is easy to apply and is simultaneously highly reactive.
