Surface modification of natural fibers for hybrid fiber-composite materials

The hybridization of natural fibers with high-performance fibers enables the production of application-oriented custom composites. Special attention is paid in this case by the researchers to the interface quality between the different fibers and the matrix.

Only with optimal surface compatibility between fiber and matrix can the forces within the finished component be ideally transmitted. Various methods of fiber pre-treatment are being evaluated in order to achieve such an optimization of the interface quality.

At the Application Center for Wood Fiber Research HOFZET, scientists are evaluating the influence of different pre-treatment methods, such as mercerization, plasma treatment and the use of varying silane-based bonding agents, on the mechanical properties of a flax/carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy resin. In the Webinar, the scientists will present their research work on these topics.
