PET fiber reinforcement in polypropylene for transport containers
Containers made of polypropylene (PP) are used en masse, among other things as transport boxes for food, mail or clothing, as small load carriers in the automotive industry and as storage boxes. Together with an industrial partner, we have found a way to manufacture the containers in a more material-efficient way and at the same time improve their durability. Other components could also be produced more sustainably and economically with the new material – for example impact-resistant exterior components for the automotive industry. In the webinar, we will present the new material and possible areas of application. We look forward to your participation and your questions!
In collaboration with ISOCO Plastics Technology GmbH we combined low-melting PP with higher-melting polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers to create a rigid and impact-resistant composite material that can be processed by injection molding. This enables the production of thin-walled, impact-resistant components that also offer better rigidity than the current series material made of unreinforced polypropylene. The new material is also more resistant to weathering. For the manufacturing, recycled PP from discarded transport boxes and fibers from recycled PET bottles were used.
